Happy Friday, everyone! I’ve created a design doc for Kubernetes Kustomize support that is open for public comment: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LW6PeO4QINXisHwXbcdFjUbh7XvvkhKYvwcIbLZTG3Q/edit?usp=sharing This will be open for public comments for the next two weeks until June 29. Let us know if you have any feedback on the design doc itself, or on the process for collecting design feedback. We’d like to get better at involving the broader community in future design work. Thanks!

To build on the note from @broad-dog-22463 above, I just wanted to share a few more details on the new Kubernetes open source projects we launched earlier this week, along a big THANK YOU to the community here for the feedback and involvement in motivating and guiding the work on several of these projects. The four projects we launched this week include: • A new in-cluster Pulumi Kubernetes Operator which provides a Kubernetes-native GitOps experience for managing infrastructure on any cloud or Kubernetes cluster. • A `kube2pulumi` tool for converting YAML manifests to Pulumi Python, TypeScript, Go, or .NET brings Pulumi’s software engineering capabilities for Infrastructure-as-Code to bear on complex Kubernetes applications. Including an website for easily converting your YAML (a similar site for
    tf2pulumi
is coming soon!). • Support for authoring Open Policy Agent (OPA)-based policies in Pulumi’s CrossGuard policy-as-code framework and enforcing rules across an organization. • A `crd2pulumi` tool to create strongly-typed APIs for any Kubernetes CRD, making it easy to leverage the full ecosystem of API extensions in the Cloud Native community. All of these projects are based on feedback from this community over the last few months, and build on the foundations laid by the core Pulumi project and in particular the Pulumi Kubernetes provider which many folks in this community use every day. Thanks for the help getting these out, and for the continued feedback. I'll also take the opportunity to thank two of our interns, @great-fireman-82197 and @worried-needle-99800 who played a big part in delivering the
    kube2pulumi
    and
    crd2pulumi
projects respectively. And if you are interested in joining in the discussion on this new work - there's a discussion on Hacker News right now that you are welcome to join in on https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24163303.

Q: is there any option to backup the JSON state file of a project / stack? I trust that Pulumi does this part very well however I am not feeling 100% confident unless those state files are backup regularly on my side..

For all the GitLab users out there - we just launched a new Pulumi <-> GitLab integration which enables posting Pulumi preview/update results (including diffs) to your GitLab merge requests for easier code review on infrastructure changes. Check out the blog on the new feature at https://www.pulumi.com/blog/gitlab-project-integration/, and the session @clever-sunset-76585 is doing later today at GitLab Commit that introduces this new feature and using Pulumi with GitLab CI/CD https://gitlabcommitvirtual2020.sched.com/event/da6J/pulumi-demo-merging-with-confidence-with-pulumi?iframe=no. 🚀

Yesterday we announced some major improvements to the Python tooling experience with Pulumi. We've updated all of our Python libraries to accept typed classes instead of raw `dict`s for nested resource arguments, providing better typechecking, IDE tooling, documentation, and API consistency. These changes are fully compatible - but allow you to opt-in to using the new API style to get the richer tooling experience. Lots more on these changes at https://www.pulumi.com/blog/announcing-python-tooling-improvements/. Python has been quickly growing as a share of the Pulumi user base over the last year, and we hope these changes will provide an even better foundation for the Python experience with Pulumi! #python

We're really excited to announce the alpha for Automation API, available today for Go and coming soon for other languages! The Automation API is the programmatic interface interface for driving Pulumi programs without the CLI. It was designed for a multitude of complex deployment orchestration and tooling scenarios such as: • Driving Pulumi deployments within CI/CD workflows • Integration testing • Multi-stage deployments such as blue-green deployment patterns • Deployments involving application code like database migrations • Building higher level tools, custom CLIs over Pulumi, application frameworks, etc. • Using Pulumi behind a REST or GRPC API • Fully featured debugging of "inline" Pulumi programs as they execute Please join us in #automation-api to discuss and learn more, and provide feedback on the alpha. The full announcement with documentation links, examples, and getting started instructions can be found here. 🏭 Happy Automating! 🏭

Fresh on the heels of the next-generation Azure provider announcement last week - we've also just made available a new https://pulumi.com/arm2pulumi tool to aide in converting existing ARM templates to Pulumi programs. This helps you quickly see what your existing Azure resources would look like as TypeScript/Python/C#/Go code, and provides an easy first step to migrating those resources to Pulumi for easier management. This new tool is fundamentally enabled by the next generation Azure provider we released last week because of the direct mapping it provides for the full Azure Resource Manager resource model. Coupled with the Azure Portal's "Export Template" feature, this provides a really easy way to take existing infrastructure that was deployed - even via point-and-click in the portal! - and see what it looks like as Pulumi code you can develop and evolve. This also provides a nice easy way to share with folks outside of the Pulumi ecosystem what Pulumi can offer them. This is the 3rd of these tools we've made available - along with https://www.pulumi.com/tf2pulumi/ and https://www.pulumi.com/kube2pulumi/ - providing paths to Pulumi from several other configuration languages into Pulumi source code. Please do feel free to share these tools with anyone interested in getting a quick taste of Pulumi and coming from one of these ecosystems! https://www.pulumi.com/arm2pulumi/

Wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone here in the Pulumi Community for your support over the last few years as we've built Pulumi up to this milestone.
