Question - is it possible to call pulumi convert from the automation api?

Not currently. I don't think anyones raised an issue for it yet so it's not been prioritised.
Long term we'd like to make sure everything in the CLI is also in automation API but currently it's a manual catch up game so things generally only get added when asked.
