I’ve got a proof of concept PR up to address this use case: <https://github.com/pulumi/pulumi-kubernetes/pull/936>

Interested in any early feedback on the approach, particularly from anybody using tools other than Pulumi (kubectl, Argo, Skaffold, etc.) to deploy k8s apps.
