I could obviously set them as secrets in the configfile, but was wondering if there was a way to grab them out of my local credentials file?

Most of the languages have some mechanism for reading environment variables, so maybe that would help?
Also, if this is the same Patrick that used to work at Heptio, then 👋🏻
